Sleepers
Timber sleepers for beds, steps and edging
New treated softwood sleepers in the 200 x 100mm size often called railway sleepers. Heavy enough to hold soil, easy enough to cut with a decent saw.

What people build with them
Raised beds
Two sleepers high gives a comfortable bed for vegetables. Use the bed calculator to count lengths.
Steps
1.2m sleepers make tidy treads on a gentle slope, backed with gravel or soil.
Edging and low walls
Long sleepers hold back a border or level a small terrace. Taller retaining walls need proper design.
Questions
Are these reclaimed railway sleepers?
No. They're new, pressure-treated softwood in the same chunky size, without the oil and tar found on old railway timber.
Can I grow vegetables in a sleeper bed?
Many people do. If you'd like a barrier, line the inside faces with a heavy-duty membrane before filling.
