Fence boards
Fence boards, sold by the board
Flat treated boards nailed to the rails to make the face of the fence. The board length is the height of the finished fence, so start here.

Boards per metre of fence
A guide for boards fixed side by side with no gaps.
| Board width | Per metre | Per 10m |
|---|---|---|
| 150mm | 7 | 67 |
| 125mm | 8 | 80 |
Board-on-board (overlapped on both faces of the rails) needs roughly double. Add a few spares for offcuts.
Choosing a length
1.8m is the standard height for a back garden boundary. 1.2m and 1.5m suit front gardens and dividing a garden without blocking light.
Taller boards need taller posts and heavier rails. Above 2m, local planning rules may apply to a boundary fence, so check with your council first.
Questions
Should boards touch the ground?
No. Leave a small gap above the soil so the bottom edge can dry out between showers.
What nails should I use?
Galvanised or stainless ring-shank nails resist rust staining and hold well in treated timber.
