Fencing timber and sleepers for Yorkshire gardens

Yorkshire gardens range from steep plots in Sheffield and the Calder Valley to flat, open ground around the Humber. Slopes and wind shape what works.

Slopes, stone and open skies

On hillside gardens, fences usually step down in bays, which means some posts need extra length. A 3m post gives room to set each step at the right height. Sleepers are a natural partner here, holding back soil to make level beds and paths.

East of the Pennines the land flattens out. Gardens near the Humber estuary and the Holderness coast see stronger winds across open ground, so heavier posts and three rails make sense for anything 1.8m tall.

Questions

How do I fence a sloping garden?

Build in level bays that step down the slope, using longer posts where the ground drops. Fill the triangular gap under each bay with a cut board or a sleeper.

How many sleepers for a terrace on a slope?

Measure the length of each retaining edge and how high it needs to be. Each sleeper adds about 100mm laid flat or 200mm on edge.
