Fence boards and posts for the West Midlands

Packed suburbs around Birmingham, Coventry and the Black Country sit alongside smallholdings in Shropshire and Herefordshire. Two very different kinds of fencing.

Suburban boundaries and rural edges

In the conurbation, many houses share boundaries on both sides, so neighbours often split the cost of a new 1.8m closeboard fence. A tidy face on both sides is easiest with a board-on-board layout, which uses roughly twice the boards.

Further west, post and rail is the usual choice for paddocks and garden edges in open country. 100 x 50mm rails at 4.2m, fixed to 4x4 posts, give a strong, simple boundary, with 6x6 posts where a gate hangs.

Questions

What is board-on-board fencing?

Boards fixed to both faces of the rails, staggered so the gaps on one side are covered by the other. It looks good from both gardens and needs about twice the boards.

What do I need for post and rail?

Posts every 1.8m to 2.4m, two or three rows of 100 x 50mm rails, and post mix. Use 6x6 posts either side of a gate.
