Fence boards, posts and sleepers for the South East

Big suburban plots in Surrey and the Thames Valley, chalk downland gardens in Sussex and Hampshire, and seafront towns along the Kent and Sussex coast. The South East has a bit of everything.

Chalk, clay and the coast

Thin chalky soil on the Downs drains quickly but can be hard to dig, so a post-hole digger or breaker bar makes setting posts easier. On the Weald clay, ground moves between wet and dry seasons, and well-set posts with post mix stay straighter.

Seafront gardens from Margate to Southsea face the prevailing south-westerlies. 4x4 posts and three rails are the safer build there. Inland, raised sleeper beds are a popular way to garden on shallow, stony chalk.

Questions

How do I dig post holes in chalk?

Break the chalk with a digging bar, then lift it out with a post-hole spade. Set the post in post mix; chalk alone won't grip it well.

How high can I build a garden fence?

Generally up to 2m without planning permission, or 1m next to a road. Check with your council if you're unsure.
