Fencing timber · Region
Fencing timber built for Scottish weather
Scotland gets the strongest winds in Britain, plenty of rain in the west and hard frosts in the east and north. A fence here needs heavy posts and a good footing.

Wind, wet and frost
Gusts in the west and on high ground can be fierce, so 100 x 100mm posts set at least 600mm deep in post mix are the sensible starting point. Three rails stop boards flexing, and slightly spaced boards let some wind through.
Hard winter frosts can lift posts that are set too shallow. Going a little deeper keeps the footing below the frozen layer. Shared tenement back greens and bungalow gardens are common in the central belt, where 1.8m boundaries are the norm.
