Fence boards, rails and posts for the North West

Rain is the defining feature of a North West garden, whether that's a Salford yard, a Cheshire semi or a cottage near the Lakes. Fences here last longest when they shed water well.

Building a fence that copes with the rain

Heavy, frequent rain means two things: keep boards clear of the soil so the bottom edge dries, and get posts deep enough to stay firm when the ground is soft. Cheshire and much of Lancashire sit on clay that holds water, so allow a little extra depth.

Across Greater Manchester and Merseyside, rows of terraces share ginnels and alleys at the back. Boundaries are usually 1.8m closeboard; front gardens tend to have lower fences with 1.2m boards.

Questions

How do I stop a fence rotting in wet weather?

Leave a gap between the boards and the ground, brush preserver onto any cut ends, and make sure water can drain away from the base of each post.

Is 4x3 strong enough in the North West?

For most sheltered town gardens, yes. On open hillsides or in the Fylde and Wirral coastal areas, a 4x4 post is the safer choice.
