Fencing timber for North East gardens

From back-lane terraces on Tyneside to coastal gardens in Northumberland and new estates around Teesside, the North East asks a lot of a fence. Cold easterlies off the North Sea are the main test.

What North East fences have to cope with

Coastal towns from Berwick down to Hartlepool catch salt-laden easterlies, so square 4x4 posts set deep are worth the small extra cost. Further inland, a 4x3 post does the job for most 1.8m boundaries.

Tyneside flats and Victorian terraces often back onto lanes where bins and cars pass close by. A solid closeboard face with a third rail stands up well to knocks, and 100 x 50mm rails make a sturdy frame for a yard gate.

Questions

Which posts suit a coastal garden in Northumberland?

Go for 100 x 100mm posts at 2.4m for a 1.8m fence and set them at least 600mm deep. Two bags of post mix per post gives a solid footing.

Can I order for a back-lane terrace?

Yes. Add the lane name or any access details in the delivery notes so we know where timber can be left.
