Fencing timber for the East of England

The flattest and driest part of the country, with a lot of sky. Without hills to break it, the wind runs freely across the Fens and the Norfolk and Suffolk coast.

Flat land, open wind

On fenland and around the coast, a fence can take the full force of the wind with nothing in the way. Square 4x4 posts, three rails and a good depth in the ground are worth it here. Board-on-board gives a little more give than solid closeboard.

Soil varies across the region, from fast-draining sand in the Brecks to heavy clay in much of Essex. Sandy ground needs a slightly deeper footing so posts don't rock; clay just needs good drainage around the post.

Questions

Will a fence blow over on the Fens?

A well-built fence on deep, square posts stands up well. Avoid lightweight 3x3 posts on exposed ground and use three rails on any 1.8m fence.

Do posts need anything special in sandy soil?

Dig a little deeper and set them in post mix rather than compacted sand, so they stay firm.
