Fencing timber for East Midlands homes

Long, narrow back gardens behind interwar semis are a feature of Nottingham, Leicester and Derby. Long runs mean the rail length you choose makes a real difference.

Long gardens, long runs

When a fence runs the full length of a long garden, 4.2m rails cut down the number of joins and look neater. Space the posts to suit, and stagger rail joins so they don't all fall on the same post.

Leicestershire and parts of Nottinghamshire have heavy clay, which shrinks in dry summers and swells in wet winters. Setting posts properly in post mix helps them stay put. Out in Lincolnshire, wide open farmland means more wind across rural plots.

Questions

Should I use 3.6m or 4.2m rails?

3.6m suits posts at 1.8m centres. 4.2m gives fewer joins on a long boundary or lets you space posts a little wider on lower fences.

Do clay soils need deeper posts?

It helps. Aim for 700 to 750mm in heavy clay and use post mix rather than backfilling with soil.
